If there is one thing we know at Body Glide it’s: How to avoid and prevent chafing.
Preventing chafing really comes down to two principles: eliminating friction and minimizing moisture. If you can do this you can keep your thighs, underarms, groin, just about anywhere completely pain and chafe-free. With a positive attitude, a proactive approach and the right combination of products, you can avoid chafing during the most strenuous activities in even the hottest, humid environments.
Here are our 4 easy tips to avoid and prevent chafing:
1: Wear the Right Gear (and avoid cotton)
- While your normal day to day underwear are probably super comfy they are likely made from cotton or a cotton blend, which just doesn’t cut it if you are trying to avoid chafing. Cotton doesn’t dry quickly enough to keep you comfortable. Cotton soaks up your sweat, then forces you to stew in it all day or through your workout. Eliminate the moisture component and you are one step closer to being chafe-free. Opt for synthetic underwear that is described as “moisture wicking” or “sweat-wicking,” which draws sweat away from your skin so that you dry quicker.
- Many athletes use compression shorts to help prevent chafing during running, cycling, and other activities. Compression shorts, sometimes called “bike shorts” – are typically made of moisture-wicking materials that compress legs in order to support muscles and aid blood circulation. But compression shorts also act as a barrier between your skin and the friction that causes chafing. Look for shorts that have flat seams to prevent thigh chafing and if you are into cycling, built-in padding in place of underwear.
- Same as your underwear look to avoid wearing cotton while you move or exercise. Cotton shirts tend to hold onto moisture more than other types of fabrics. The moisture causes them to cling to your body which causes friction and moisture to build up. Look for moisture-wicking clothing which is made to draw moisture away from your body keeping your body cool, while allowing you to stay relatively dry throughout the day. Seamless, form-fitting shirts that are moisture wicking will be your best friend in eliminating chafing as they prevent both of the main causes of chafing- friction and moisture.
- This tip goes out to all the ladies out there! Invest in sports bras that wick away moisture and are seamless. Moisture-wicking clothing will draw your sweat up and away from the skin preventing moisture build up. - Avoid cotton socks (you should know this by now)! The best socks to help prevent foot blisters and chafing will fit well, be made of moisture-wicking materials, and keep your feet cool and dry. Socks should fit snugly (not loose or able to bunch up near heel or toes ), have synthetic materials that help keep feet dry and cool, and should not have any padding or seams that can rub or chafe.
- Just like your socks, shoes should fit well and keep your feet cool and dry. If you want to avoid blisters, make sure to buy shoes that do not allow your feet or toes to move too much while you move. Next time you head out to buy a pair of shoes remember to go in the afternoon. Throughout the day our feet begin to swell and purchasing them later in the day will compensate for this. Also, make sure to buy shoes that are comfortable from the get-go, it is nearly impossible to actually “break-in” a pair of shoes that are uncomfortable.
2: Drying Powders
Absorbing the moisture from the start is also a great way to avoid and prevent chafing. Drying powders absorb sweat and oil without drying out the skin. They are also great for keeping you smelling fresh whether on your toes or in your pants. While good for absorbing moisture drying powders do have the potential to get all over your clothing making you look like you just got done baking a batch of cookies in your pants. So be careful with how much you apply and when. Applying before getting dressed is your best bet and use it sparingly.
We’ve covered some great tips perfect for keeping the moisture away but what about the second half of the equation? Preventing friction is easy when you use a lubricant that keeps your skin smooth and free from friction. Stock up on Body Glide and apply to anywhere you have potential to chafe. 4: Moisturize & Hydrate
Part of preventing chafing is done while you are away from the elements.
