Underarm Chafing

Chafing is a friction-induced skin injury where the outer layer of the skin is rubbed off leaving the underlying skin red, raw and irritated. Most runners and fitness enthusiasts experience chafing in any number of places- their feet, between their thighs, groin, and especially under their arms. Underarm chafing is a problem during running activities due to the repetitive motion of lifting and pumping your arms back and forth. Combine this with the dampness of your skin and clothing and an enormous amount of friction is being concentrated in the area between your underarms and chest.

Avoid having to deal with painful, chafed underarms with these simple tips:

  • Lube Up
    • The cause of all underarm chafing is friction. Eliminate the potential for friction by first applying Body Glide’s Body balm. Body stops chafing, raw skin, and  irritation caused by friction. Made with plant derived ingredients, simply rub on your underarms and chest before every run to prevent chafing from occurring.
  • Hydrate
    • Staying well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids can help reduce your chances of irritation. If you’re dehydrated, your body is unable to flush salts away from your skin as easily. This salt dries on your skin and clothing, causing minor abrasions that lead to chafing and raw skin.
  • Choose Appropriate Clothing
    • Cotton is more likely to hold sweat and moisture next to your skin and baggy clothing can bunch up.  Both of these things can lead to more opportunities to chafe. Instead, exercise in form fitting, breathable, moisture-wicking synthetic clothing. This type of clothing does a better job at drawing the salt and sweat away from the surface of your skin- protecting you from underarm chafing.
